Japanese Last Names and Where They Come From

Landscape names

Many surnames describe where a family lived: Tanaka (in the middle of the rice fields), Yamamoto (at the base of the mountain), Hayashi (woods), Shimizu (clear water). Because villages were built around fields, rivers and hills, those words were easy to use as names.

Clan names and wisteria

Powerful families gave names to their branches. The Fujiwara clan, whose name means wisteria plain, spread many names that contain the character for wisteria, such as Sato, Ito, Kato and Endo.

When did everyone get a surname?

For most of Japan's history only nobles and samurai had family names. In 1875 the government required every citizen to register one, and families chose names from their surroundings, jobs or local temples. That is why the country has so many different surnames.

The most common names

Sato and Suzuki are consistently at the top, followed by Takahashi, Tanaka and Watanabe. You can explore the list and each name's kanji on the last names pages of this site.

Reading a surname

Most surnames have two kanji: a landscape word and a word for a place. Tanaka is 田 (rice field) plus 中 (middle). Hayashi is 林, woods. Yamaguchi is 山 (mountain) plus 口 (mouth, an entrance). Once you know a few common characters, you can read the meaning of many surnames.

Surnames by region

Some surnames are common in particular areas. Okinawan surnames, such as Higa and Shimabukuro, sound different from mainland surnames, and many Hokkaido surnames reflect families who moved there in the Meiji period. This is why a surname can tell you something about family history.
