Why Japanese Names Can Be Hard to Read
Names have special readings
Most kanji have several readings. In names, there are extra readings that do not appear in normal words, called nanori. That is why 遥 can be read Haruka while it is also used for other sounds.
Even Japanese people ask
It is normal for Japanese speakers to ask how a name is read. On forms you will often see the reading written above the name in small kana for exactly this reason.
What to do
Ask the person, or look for the reading on their business card or email signature. When you write about someone, give both the kanji and the reading the first time.
Use the reading beside the kanji
Each name page on this site shows the reading beside every kanji spelling, so you can see how the same sound is written in different ways.
Examples
The character 遥 is read haruka in names, though it is also read haru and haruka in words. The name 大地 can be read Daichi or, rarely, Taichi. A reading may depend on the family's wish, which is why even a very common spelling can have more than one reading.
Helping others read your name
If your name has an unusual reading, add the kana beside it on forms and business cards. Japanese official forms have a special space for furigana, the reading written in small kana, for exactly this reason.
